The Civic Leadership Program is designed to support and empower Russian democratically-minded, socially active emigrants, passionate about promoting social good and democratic reforms. By combining educational mentorship and practical experience, the program equips participants with the tools and network needed to make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond. Why Join the Civic Leadership Fellowship?
As a Fellow, you’ll gain:
Targeted Networking
Access to professors, policy experts, and practitioners working on Russia-related research and policy, with a focus on building durable professional connections.
Internship Placement
Direct support in securing an internship at a think tank, research center, or policy organization working on Russia, enabling Fellows to gain hands-on experience and embed themselves in relevant professional networks in the US and EU.

Step 4: Join the Community
Connect with like-minded emigrants from Russia who share your vision for democratic values and career growth in governance and policy, share your experience, and grow your network.
Step 5: Get an Internship Placement
Based on your interests, we connect you with internship opportunities at think tanks, research centers, or policy organizations working in your field.
Step 6: Apply your Skills for Meaningful Impact
Collaborate with Russia-focused research centers and NGOs to apply your new knowledge over the summer internship. Work on meaningful projects, such as Russia-focused research, advocacy and human rights support, development of legal frameworks.
FAQ
Does the fellowship provide financial support?
The fellowship does not offer direct financial support. However, we provide guidance on securing scholarships, research assistantships, navigating financial aid options available at various universities, and other funding opportunities.
Will I be subject to a 2-year home residency requirement based on J1 visa?
No, our program provides support for students in receiving F1 visas to the United States, which are not subject to a 2 year home residency requirement.
Do you rely on financial channels, which can later endanger the closing of the program?
No, we are an independent organization, which relies on volunteer support.
Do you provide support with applications to Western universities?
Our current focus is on supporting internship placements. However, we have prior experience assisting with university applications. For additional details, contact civicleadership@libertyforward.org
Who are our Internship Partners?
Our internship partners include international organizations, research institutes, NGOs, and civic initiatives operating across policy, governance, human rights, and data-driven social impact. Current partners include Outrush, Transparency International, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, and Russian America for Democracy in Russia (RADR).
